Deb Thurman Therapy

A counsellor in Rugby

I am an experienced counsellor/psychotherapist offering 1 to 1 therapy for individuals in Rugby, Leicester and the surrounding area. My ground floor practice room offers a safe space for you to look at whatever it is that is causing you unrest, in the presence of a compassionate professional. I work either short term solution focussed or longer term dependant upon your needs.

I work with adults and young people. As well as my private practice in Rugby I work with a diverse range of individuals for a charitable counselling organisation in Leicester, and in a school in Birmingham with 11-16 year olds.

I work with a variety of issues including:

  • Abuse
  • Addiction
  • Affairs and betrayal
  • Anger
  • Anxiety
  • Bereavement
  • Bullying
  • Childhood experiences
  • Depression
  • Dissociation
  • Eating disorders
  • Emotional abuse
  • Life changes/crisis
  • Low self esteem
  • Personality disorders
  • Redundancy
  • Relationship issues
  • Self harm
  • Separation and divorce
  • Sexual abuse
  • Stress
  • Suicidal thoughts and feelings
  • Trauma
  • Work related issues.

I used to work in social housing with a variety of people from diverse backgrounds, including homeless families and vulnerable individuals, and then re-trained as a counsellor/psychotherapist.

I've had extensive therapy myself. My own experience has provided me with a belief in and passion for talking therapy. Self awareness has helped me immensely, so that I can be authentic and creative when I work with people in counselling. This has also given me the strength to really walk alongside my clients during difficult times and the ability to work at depth, if required.

Counselling Training and Qualifications

I trained for 5 years at Leicester University in Psychodynamic Counselling and Psychotherapy, and hold an MA. I'm particularly interested in how unexpressed emotions can be found in the body, sometimes in the form of symptoms. I also focus on repeating patterns of behaviour, early experiences and the unconscious (see my Therapy page for more detail).

I also place importance upon the relationship between counsellor and client — it's important you find the right counsellor for you.

My qualifications are:

I am a registered member of the British Association for Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP) and abide by their ethical framework. I hold a current DRB. I undertake Continuing Professional Development, as requested by the BACP and to enhance my practice.
